By Fineline + Kat Lyadova
Perspectives is a series by Fineline on the impact of meaningful art in the home. In this piece, Toronto resident and designer Kat Lyadova shares her passion for homegrown artistry and her support for the work by artist Natasha Dichpan. Kat speaks about how the piece ‘Impressions’ she recently purchased from Natasha – an enchanting monochromatic portrait – has brought charm and whimsy to her home’s living space.

Sophisticated Monochrome Elegance
I’m going for a mid-century modern style with more emphasis on modernity. I like natural materials and an abundance of light. The colour scheme is intentionally muted, sprinkled with selective colour accents. For instance, my living room is mostly black and white, with a few natural touches that come from the warm wooden flooring and the green plants. I’d say I started with a minimalist approach, but over time, it has evolved into a more eclectic mix.
Curating a Sentimental Gallery
Ironically, choosing art for my own home is often the toughest task. I pick every piece with great care, delving into the nuances of each. Most of the artworks I own carry sentimental value, whether they're by friends I respect highly or artists who touch my soul. When I first moved into my house, 5 years ago I reached out to some of my favourite artists on social media, asking if they had pieces available for purchase. Nowadays I often go to gallery openings and local art fairs buying works that resonate with me when the budget permits. Notably, I secured some of Natasha's pieces even before settling into my home, confident I'd find the perfect spot for them.
A Captivating Gaze and Untold Stories
‘Impressions’ by Natasha is one of my favourites. First, I spotted it on her Instagram right after she just created it. Later, seeing it at her studio sale, I knew I had to have it. It’s minimalist but very powerful. Depicting only a fragment of a face emerging from an ink drop, it evokes a profound emotion, making you wonder what is happening on the other side of the canvas. The eyes are particularly captivating, gazing into your very core, laden with curiosity, calm, and a hint of melancholy. I purposefully never asked about the model's identity; I don’t want to know. I feel it could be someone I know from before or someone I have yet to meet.
